Built to defend Savannah and the Georgia coast, Fort James Jackson has played a vital role in America’s military history from the War of 1812 to today.

Construction began in 1808 to strengthen the defense of Savannah and the Georgia coast. The fort was named in honor of Major General James Jackson.

Fort James Jackson was part of a system of coastal defenses built to protect the port of Savannah from naval attacks and potential invasions.

HISTORY

Built in 1808, Fort James Jackson is one of the oldest brick fortifications in the United States. 

It was constructed to defend Savannah and the shipping channel along the Savannah River.

The fort played key roles in the War of 1812, the Civil War, and both World Wars

Despite attacks and sieges over the years, Fort James Jackson never fell to an enemy.

Today, it remains an active military installation and a National Historic Landmark,

 preserving more than 200 years of American military history and coastal defense.

Visitors can explore the historic grounds, see original cannons, and enjoy beautiful views of the Savannah River.
