HISTORY

Built in 1819 for shipbuilder Richard Richardson, the Owens-Thomas House is a splendid example of English Regency architecture

adapted for the American South. In 1830, it was purchased by cotton merchant William Jay and later by banker Richard Arnold in 1851.

In 1951, the house was saved from demolition by a dedicated group of women and opened as a museum.

The Owens-Thomas House was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970 in recognition of its architectural significance and preservation.
